The Story Behind the Rockn50
The Rockn50 Ranch had a name long before it had a home.
As a young police officer in the 1990s, I patrolled areas of Abilene where open-air drug markets were common. The term "5-0," popularized by the television series Hawaii Five-O, had become a familiar street slang reference to the police. Whenever my patrol car rounded the corner, a lookout would shout "50!" to warn everyone that the police had arrived. Years later, when I began thinking about a place to call my own after retirement, that old expression took on an entirely different meaning.
The idea was simple: after a career in law enforcement and public service, it would be time to trade the patrol car for a rocking chair and enjoy a slower pace of life.
And so, the Rockin' 5-0 was born.
The brand features an offset 50 positioned above a curved rocker, symbolizing the gentle rocking motion of a rocking chair — a nod to my law enforcement career and the retirement years ahead.
Eventually, the dream became more than just a name. We found our place in Haskell County, Texas — a stretch of creek-bottom country surrounded by rolling plains and cotton fields.
What followed has been a labor of love: clearing brush, improving fences, developing water, building a barn, and bringing cattle and horses onto the property.
The ultimate goal is to build our home here, making the ranch not just a place to spend weekends, but the place we'll call home in retirement.
There's still plenty to do, but that's part of the enjoyment. The ranch isn't just about retirement. It's about building something that our family can enjoy for years to come.
